Over a cool margarita on the sun-drenched patio in a quaint Mexican town, as a late afternoon breeze gently swayed brilliant bougainvillea against a pastel adobe wall, Embellishments was born.

My husband Thomas, a gifted cabinet maker and designer of custom furniture, and I, Melinda, a decorative painter, had been talking for some time about developing a new business, related to our talents. We traveled to Mexico, seeking tranquility, to leave behind the daily work schedules and deadlines. We checked into the most charming B & B and found ourselves surrounded by bright flowers, lush vegetation, comfortable colonial style decorative furniture and delightful accessories, candles everywhere. The flower-filled courtyard and musical fountain added to the enchantment. These items, made by young and old hands, each with its own story, made us feel connected somehow to this magical place. We thought how marvelous to be able to share this with others, to........embellish their lives, just as ours has been. After a few days of strolling cobblestone streets and chatting with artisans in their ateliers, we realized this could be "it." Definitely a life-changing holiday!

We opened our store, Embellishments, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1998, where our daughter Ashley, clever entrepreneur and ski enthusiast and her husband Jason, business man and website designer, live. They became as enthusiastic as we were when they heard of our experience and are now in charge of the day to day operations at Embellishments. Ashley and I go to Mexico several times a year to buy more beautiful things from the vendors we know, and the new ones we meet each trip. The response to our opening has been overwhelming and we continue to sell out as soon as a shipment arrives in the store--classical tin ware, ceramics, wood carvings, furniture and more. Never the same, always interesting. Our world wide clientele in Steamboat Springs has continually asked us to be more accessible to them when they are not in town, for their home décor as well as for gifts...hence the web site. A catalogue would never be up to date, as we continually receive unusual, often one-of-a-kind items from Mexico, and around the globe. They understand and respond to the passion we feel towards the discovery of new merchandise and trust our taste.
